CAREER DAY CHAPEL ON DEC. 7TH!!

GRADE 6 STUDENTS,

In Grades 4, 5, and 6, we are studying possible CAREERS you may be interested in having when you grow up.  Each student will be researching a career he/she is interested in pursuing in the future, OR maybe one you want to find out more about!!  Some of our researching and writing  will be done in school, BUT you are allowed to do some of the work at home, with help from your parents, if you wish!!  Keep reading to find out all the details!!

BELOW ARE TWO WEBSITES YOU MAY USE TO INVESTIGATE YOUR CHOSEN CAREER.

  • www.bls.gov/k12/azlist.htm –This website lists careers in ABC order.  You choose a job and “click” on it.  It takes you to that site and will share information—the training and education needed, earnings, expected job prospects, what the workers do on the job, and working conditions.  This is a U.S. website, so will share information from there.
  • www.career-descriptions.co.uk/complete-list-of-careers.htm    This website lists ALL careers in ABC order.  You “click” on the one you want and it will give you information like:  What am I going to do in this occupation?  Requirements, Where can I work? Can I work for myself in this occupation?
  • Students may also “Google” the career and find more information.

HERE ARE THE STEPS TO FOLLOW:

1.     Have your notes completed by Tuesday, Nov. 29th. (Use the worksheet provided.  Make sure you cite the websites used.)

2.      Write a first draft paragraph about the career you chose. Instructions will be given to you for the format. This will be due on Thursday, Dec. 1st.

3.     Type a FINAL copy by Monday, Dec. 5th.

4.     Two students will be chosen to read their paragraphs in our “Career Days” Chapel on Wednesday, Dec. 7th.  You may “dress up” as the person in that career

POTATO EXPERIMENT RESULTS!!

The POTATO EXPERIMENT has ended!!  Here are the results of testing their hypotheses (independent variables were water, sunlight, or temperature; dependent varaibles were the two potatoes).  You all did an amazing observation of your TWO potatoes for NINE days!!  Here are the results!!

Austin, Alex, and Ethan–(potato in the  refrigerator vs. potato at room temperature)  The potato in the refrigerator didn’t grow and partly rotted; the room temperature potato grew very well and developed sprouts.  Their hypothesis was supported as they “guessed ” that the room termperature potato would grow more than the one in the refrigerator.  See photo #4  below.

Lucas, Abby, and Madeline–(one potato received 1 cm of water; the other 2.5 cm of water)  The potato with less water did not sprout as much as the potato with more water. Their hypothesis was supported, as they “guessed” that the one with more water would grow more because it had more nutrients. See photo #2 below.

Eve, Tamina, and Ryan– (one potato received 1 cm of water; the other 3 cm of water)  Both potatoes did not fare welll–they both rotted!!  Their hypothesis was not supported, as they “guessed” the one with 3 cm of water would grow more because it received more water.

Ben, Andy, and Selina– (one potato received 1/3 cup of water; the other 1/4 cup of water)   Their hypothesis was partly supported and they had “guessed” that the potato in 1/3 cup of water would probably drown and not grow.  BUT the potato in 1/4 cup of water did grow more, with 9 sprouts!! See photo #1 below.

Cedric, Phoebe, and David–(one potato received 1 cm of water; the other 2 cm of water)   Their hypothesis WAS supported!!  They had “guessed” that the potato in less water would grow better, and it did!  See photo  #5 below.

Mason, Gillian, and Stephen–(one potato received 1/2 cm of water; the other received 2.5 cm of water)  They “guessed” that the potato with less water would grow faster.  Their hypothesis was NOT supported, as both potatoes did not grow well, and both started sprouting a bit.

Stefanie and Ginae–(one potato received direct sunlight; the other potato very little sunlight)  They had “guessed,” as their hypothesis, that the one with more sun would sprout better because potatoes need sun.  Their hypothesis was NOT supported, as the potatoe with less sun actually sprouted better!!

Ashley, Paul, and Jadon–(one potato received sun; the other one was in the shade)  Their hypothesis was that the potato with more sun would sprout and the other one wouldn’t.  This was NOT supported, as the one in the shade grew better!!

Laura and Taylor–(one potatoe was in direct sun; the other one was in the shade)   Their “guess” was that the one in the sun would grow better.  Their hypothesis was supported, as the one in the sun really grew!!   See photo #3 below.

GOOD JOB, ALL OF YOU!!
